Evelyn Welch is a Professor of Renaissance Studies in the School of English and Drama. A specialist in Italian Renaissance art and material culture, she graduated from Harvard University and took her PhD at the Warburg Institute, University of London. Before coming to Queen Mary in 2004 she was Pro-Vice Chancellor, Teaching and Learning and the University of Sussex. In 2006 Professor Welch was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy.

Professor Welch’s publications include Art in Renaissance Italy (Oxford, 2000) and Shopping in the Renaissance. Consumer Cultures in Italy, 1400-1600 (Yale, 2005), one of the winners of the 2005 Wolfson Prize for History. She is currently working on a project on Early Modern Dress and in 2007 she was appointed Director or the Arts and Humanities Research Council £5.5 million strategic initiative, Beyond Text: Sounds, Voices, Images, Objects which will operate out of Queen Mary from 2007 until 2012.
