Academic appeals

An academic appeal is the only method by which a student can request a review of an Examination Board decision. Before submitting an academic appeal you MUST read the guidelines and regulations below to see if you have any grounds.

You are strongly advised to talk to your tutor or another member of staff in your department before submitting an academic appeal. Please do not email the Principal! You can also seek advice from the Advocacy and Representation officer in the Students' Union.

Please note that the following are NOT considered valid grounds for an appeal:

  • Appeals against the academic judgment of internal or external examiners.
  • Lack of awareness by the student of the relevant procedure or regulations.
  • The retrospective reporting of extenuating circumstances that might have been reasonably made known at the time.
  • Appeals that are based on the informal assessment of a student’s work by members of academic staff.
  • Marginal failure to attain a higher class of degree.
  • Vexatious or frivolous appeals.

Specifically in relation to points 2 and 3 above, students often claim that they simply didn't know about extenuating circumstances or didn't think it applied to them. It is your responsibility to be aware of all the rules, regulations and procedures of the College and your department and simply not being aware of these or thinking they do not apply are never considered valid grounds for an appeal and will not be upheld. All students are very strongly urged to read their handbooks and the Student Guide to be familiar with the rules and regulations.
