Information Governance

What is information governance?

At Queen Mary, information governance consists of the policies, procedures and other controls for managing information and complying with legal and operational requirements. It includes Freedom of Information, data protection, information security and records management.

Freedom of information

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 has the aim of promoting greater openness about the way public authorities operate. The Act provides a statutory right with effect from 1 January 2005 for members of the public to have access to information held by public authorities, subject to certain exemptions.

QMUL's FOI web pages contain further information and advice for members of Queen Mary on the Freedom of Information Act, and on responding to requests.

Data protection

The Data Protection Act 1998 first came into effect in March 2000, and was extended to cover structured manual records in October 2001. It is due to be replaced in May 2018. Underlying the Act is a set of principles governing good practice which underpin Queen Mary's approach to data protection. QMUL has a Data Protection Policy [PDF 365KB] setting out these principles and the rights and responsibilities of it as a data controller and its data subjects. QMUL is also required to notify its use of personal data, the types of data and the purposes for which this data is processed to the Information Commissioner. This notification can be viewed on the Information Commissioner’s web site. Note that the Students' Union and the University of London are separate data controllers and have their own notifications.

QMUL's Data protection web page contains further information.

Records management

Managing records and information through their lifecycle can help you achieve greater compliance and work more effectively. See the Records Management web pages for more details.
