Enrolment and registration
Welcome to the Doctoral College at Queen Mary University of London. Whether you are a new student or are continuing your studies, it is important that you enrol with the College every year. When you enrol for the first time, you will need to visit the Research Degrees Office at Mile End in person, but in future years you will be able to re-enrol online. New students in 2012/13 can enrol on any of the dates below. Before your visit, please refer to the enrolment instructions sent to you by the Research Admissions Officer. You will need to complete the pre-enrolment process through MySIS (log-in required) before your agreed enrolment date.

On your enrolment day, please come to the Research Degrees Office with all requested documentary evidence. Please remember to pre-enrol online first. Your offer letter will explain how to do this, and will also specify the documents you will need to bring with you.
Important: If you have been asked to obtain an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate, it is your responsibility to apply for and obtain the certificate. You will not be able to enter the UK or enrol without the ATAS certificate. For information about the ATAS scheme and how it may affect you, please refer to the ATAS pages on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website.
If, due to exceptional circumstances, you are unable to attend one of the enrolment dates listed above, your supervisor must write to the Research Degrees Officer for your School to arrange an alternative enrolment date. Your supervisor will inform you of the new enrolment date.
Once you have enrolled, you will be issued with an ID card and Queen Mary email address. It is important that you access this email account regularly or set up auto-forwarding to your private email address, as the College will use it to send you official communications. Please ensure that you keep your contact details up-to-date in MySIS.
A student is normally permitted to take up to six weeks vacation in a year. The timings of vacations are agreed by the student’s principal supervisor. A full time student is not permitted to undertake other duties or work (apart from limited demonstrating or tutorial duties) without the approval of his/her principal supervisor(s) unless provided for in the terms of any studentship.
All students must familiarise themselves with the QMUL Policy on Research Ethics, including any requirements for formal ethical review, and ensure that their research conforms to it.
Re-enrolment of continuing students
Students must re-enrol at the beginning of each academic year through MySIS. If you fail to re-enrol, you will not be entitled to letters confirming your student status, and your registration with the College will be terminated. If you experience difficulty re-enrolling, please inform the Research Degrees Officer for your School.
You are required to be enrolled with the College until you have been awarded your degree, or unless you are interrupting your studies.
The registration period starts on the date of a student’s initial enrolment and registration with the College for the research studies programme. The period of study ends on the date of submission of the thesis, and the registration period ends either with the award of the degree or termination of registration.
