Supporting Students for Semester-based Exams

Background

As many of you will be aware, academic year 2019/2020 is the first session in which students in the Faculties of Science & Engineering and Humanities & Social Sciences will be examined at the end of each semester. In previous years students had one six week exam period at the end of the academic year, which started in April and finished in early June.

Queen Mary has made this change so that students no longer have to revise material taught in their first semester some six months after they covered it in class, and to avoid one large exam period that many students (and staff) reported as causing undue levels of stress and anxiety. It is also brings us into line with the vast majority of other universities, including those in the Russell Group.

Academic Registry and Council Secretariat have created a Frequently Asked Questions page for students that explains the reasoning behind the university’s decision in more detail. Click here to access this page.

To recognise that we are asking students to revise over the Christmas vacation period, the university has reviewed what support is available to students after the end of teaching on Friday 13th December through to the beginning of the January exam period on Monday 6th January 2020.

The vast majority of buildings and services at Queen Mary (including the Student Union) will close on Monday 23rd December, bar the Mile End Library (see below) and the university Halls of Residence, (for those students who live there). However, there will be some services open to students between Christmas Eve and the 2nd January, when the university reopens.

Mile End Library

The main change to the way that the university supports students over what has traditionally been a very quiet time of the year is the decision to open the Mile End library over the Christmas closure period on every day bar public holidays, i.e. Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years’ Day.

The library will close at midnight on Friday 13th December; it will then be open from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm from Saturday 14th December to Tuesday 31st December, barring the Bank Holidays. It will reopen on a 24/7 basis from 8.00 am on the 2nd January.

The table below simplifies the opening times on all dates from Monday 23rd December to Friday 3rd January 2020.
