Electronic Status Letter

Whilst studying, there may be times that you require evidence of your student status. Therefore, you may wish to obtain a student status letter from the university.

The electronic letter is on Queen Mary headed paper and has been digitally signed by the Academic Registrar. It shows the following information:

  • Name of Student
  • Date of Birth
  • Intended Award
  • Programme of Study
  • Mode of Study
  • Date of Entry to Programme
  • Expected Date of Completion
  • Awarding Body
  • Term-time Address
  • Home Address

All fully enrolled undergraduate (except MBBS, BDS, BUPT and Nanchang programmes†), taught postgraduate, associate and pre-sessional students will be issued with a digitally signed electronic document via a service supplied by Gradintelligence once they have activated their account.

† If you need a letter and are not eligible for an electronic version, please contact the Student Enquiry Centre to obtain a printed version.

Please check your details are up to date on MySIS. Any changes to your address will be reflected in your letter within 24 hours.

If your enrolment status changes to resitting out of attendance, interrupting or withdrawn, your letter will be updated to reflect your status.

Bank Letter

If you want to open a UK student bank account, you may be asked to supply a letter confirming that you are an enrolled student at Queen Mary University of London.

The bank letter is on Queen Mary headed paper and contains the university stamp and seal and the following information:

  • Name of the bank
  • Name of student
  • Date of Birth
  • Intended award
  • Programme of Study
  • Date of Entry to Programme
  • Mode of Study
  • Expected Date of Completion

Please note that Santander Univeristy branches will accept a print out of your electronic status letter in order to open a student bank account with them. Other banks may not so please check their terms and conditions.

The letter includes your term and home address taken from your student record. Please check your details are up to date on MySIS before requesting this letter.

Council Tax Exemption Letter


Queen Mary no longer provides council tax exemption letters for students living in the following boroughs:

  • Newham
  • Redbridge
  • Tower Hamlets
  • Waltham Forest

Instead we provide information directly to the Council.  Therefore you do not need to request a council tax exemption letter. However, you must ensure that your term time address is up to date in MySIS

If you live in one of the following boroughs you must also complete the councils student disregard form and return it to them in order for your exemption to be processed:

Newham: student disregard application form

Redbridge: student disregard application form

Tower Hamlets: student disregard application form

Waltham Forest: student disregard application form

Please note: The Newham, Redbridge and Waltham Forest disregard forms will ask you to upload a student certificate. As a Queen Mary student you will not need to supply this, please just upload a blank Word document in this part of the form.

For those living in other council boroughs, you will need to provide your council with proof that you are a full time student so that you can be exempt from paying council tax.


The electronic status letter (please see above) can be used to confirm your details, but you can still visit the Student Enquiry Centre if you want to collect on in person.

The letter also includes your term and home address taken from your student record. Please check your on MySIS before requesting this letter.

Resitting Out of Attendance Short-Term Student Visa Letter

If you have decided that you would like to apply for a Short-Term Student visa to return to the UK to sit your examinations you may need to prove your student status.

The resitting out of attendance Short-Term Student visa letter is on Queen Mary headed paper and contains the university stamp and seal and the following information:

  • Name of student
  • Date of Birth
  • Intended award
  • Programme of Study
  • Mode of Study
  • Date of Entry to Programme
  • Expected Date of Completion
  • Awarding Body

We issue the Short-Term Student visa letters to all international re-sitting students in the beginning of second semester so you do not need to request the letter. If you registered for your re-sits, you will be receiving the letter by mid February. Please check your address details are up to date on MySIS. Interim Transcript

An interim transcript will list all completed years' modules and their overall grades.

Please note due to provisional results appearing on transcripts whilst they are processed and confirmed at the exam boards, there are periods of time when the Student Enquiry Centre cannot provide transcripts.  These dates are:

Undergraduates (non-MBBS & BDS): 14 May – 11 July 2018 
For students taking late summer resits: 28 August – 12 September 2018
Postgraduates †: 14 May – 23 July 2018 and 28 August – 31 October 2018

† Not all Schools and Institutes consider continuing postgraduates’ results in their summer exam boards.  If they do not, we will not be able to provide you with a transcript until the official publication date of 31 October 2018.

BUPT students will need to contact the BUPT JP Administrator staff in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science to request a transcript.

Nanchang students will need to contact the Nanchang JP Administrators to request a transcript.

Withdrew from Queen Mary?

If you left Queen Mary without having completed your course you can request a withdrawal letter that confirms the dates you were registered as a student at the university and/or a transcript of all the modules you studied and the marks obtained.

You can either request this letter via email  or visit the Student Enquiry Centre. Please note that there may by a £10 charge for this documentation.
